History

In the early spring of 1967 a group of Sherborn residents felt a need to start an organization that would celebrate the many beautiful areas of open space in Sherborn. The Sherborn Forest and Trail Association’s (SFTA) primary purpose was to assist in and promote the development of the open space in Sherborn; to develop walking and riding trails and encourage the use of sound conservation practices in Sherborn.

The SFTA flourished by sponsoring activities such as family canoe trips, walks, picnics, horse shows and trail clearing to name just a few. Educational ski waxing clinics, horsemanship classes and environmental film presentations at the library were popular topics of interest.

The association assisted the Sherborn Board of Health in developing regulations for licensed stables in town. They also created and distributed signs to private landowners for the purpose of marking their private trails.

With funds raised from membership and the annual hunter pace, the organization has been able to assist financially with the purchase of two parcels of open space in Sherborn. The organization is very active in clearing and maintaining trails. With the help of the local Boy Scout troop, foot bridges and signage have been implemented on some trails. Water bars were installed on a few steep trails in the Town Forest and felled trees are constantly being removed by membership volunteers. Recently the SFTA has highlighted education through Conservation Connections: Conscientious Cocktail Parties. Topics have included wetland protection, trail etiquette and recycling.

The SFTA continues to lead walks, canoe trips, hunter paces and many other family oriented activities and encourages all residents and members to enjoy the many areas of open space in Sherborn.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of the many events and activities that the Forest and Trail Association presents for the town; therefore we encourage anyone interested in volunteering to contact us at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
